Does Erling Haaland Look Like a Neanderthal or a Black Man?

The line between an innocent joke and dangerous ideology is thinner than we think, and Haaland's face has become an unlikely case study in how eugenics survives online.

Erling Haaland is having a World Cup moment, and the internet has decided his face is a riddle. Does he look like an Alien? Like a Neanderthal? Like a Black person?

Candidly, this discourse is disturbing.

There’s a specific video on my feed measuring Haaland’s head. Someone lines up his skull, jaw, and brow to sort him into an ancestral “type.” The clip drops the words “dolichocephalic,” which means “long-skulled.” That pseudoscience is called “craniometry”, and it built the scaffolding for some of the last century’s worst crimes.

To see why “long-skulled” is loaded, meet Madison Grant. In 1916 he published “The Passing of the Great Race,” carving Europeans into three races and crowning the tall, blond, long-skulled Nordic as the master type. Dolichocephalic. Grant helped push the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act that slammed the door on “less desirable” immigrants, and his ideas fed America’s forced-sterilization campaigns. Adolf Hitler reportedly called Grant’s book “my Bible.”

I don’t think the people posting are evil, and they aren’t aiming anything cruel at Haaland. But that’s my point. The eugenics framework is so subtle that it seeps into online discourse unnoticed. This is the same pseudoscience that justified quotas, sterilizations, and gas chambers, and is very much still alive on the forums where the far right recruits today. We can’t let it go beyond that.

If you believe that confronting the truth of our past is essential to any claim this country makes toward justice, then I ask for your support.

So many of you have subscribed to this newsletter.

But less than 5% of you are paid, supporters.

That makes it hard to keep this going, especially when platforms like TikTok and Instagram are so unstable. I’ve had videos removed, been mass-reported by trolls, and constantly worry about getting shadowbanned or banned completely.

This newsletter is one of the only spaces where I can share these stories without censorship. But I need help to grow it.

  • 📖 If just 5% of you became paid subscribers, I could continue bringing on professors, historians, and other experts to unpack these issues in even deeper ways.

  • 🧠 If 10% signed up, I could quit everything else and go full-time — publishing multiple articles a day, covering the latest news, and connecting it to the hidden histories they don’t teach in school.

  • 🌎 And if 20% of you subscribed, I could turn this into a platform that lifts up other truth-tellers. Young writers, educators, and creators who are brilliant but have nowhere to share their voices. Especially those from marginalized communities who get ignored by traditional media.

I’m going to be direct: You might think someone else will step up to contribute to this page, but that’s exactly what everyone else is thinking too. This only works if each one of us contributes what we can, which is just the cost of a coffee each month.
