I hope the Gap outsells American Eagle. 😂

Very informative and well written. I hope GAP thrives!!!

And here I sit-- a middle aged (soon to be senior citizen) African American woman with a French surname who possesses ancestry in the American South! A maternal great grandmother who was a former slave-- And a paternal great grandfather who boasted the title of slave master... All while wearing my wide legged camouflage GAP jeans😉

Donald Trump, Republican Party, American Eagle and Ms. Sweeney ... My genetics have dictated that my skin is dark brown-- the grade of my hair kinky!!! And my nose--WIDE! And guess what? I'm damned proud of my genes as well♥️🖤💚

IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

Te Time's avatar

It’s not unusual to be proud of oneself. Genes we can’t help. Some have good jeans and some have bad. Some are born in privilege, and some are not.

And round and round we go arguing amongst ourselves, while the rich get richer, and we get to buy and bitch about what kind of jeans to wear. Can’t make this shit up.

Meanwhile, there are people dying all over the world. Africans are starving, and all American women care about are Jeans/Genes. Got to be proud of that.

Complaining about this on social media is a great idea and not contextually hypocritical at all

Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta are soooo Blue. And 90% of my closet. I love them.

Nike, too.

Kathy Tankersley's avatar

Old Navy sales are great for kids back to school shopping-went with my daughter and granddaughter to shop for my great grandchildren and used the mark downs, cardholder discount and saved almost 40% off the total. Went to Kohl’s, bought their shoes for school and got 20% off total tab plus in store sales. Don’t know much about Kohl’s and where they stand with all this but I will check. Forget Target. They kissed the pig’s ring.

KCathcart's avatar

Yes!! The app Goods Unite Us will tell you how companies donate. After wearing Brooks exclusively for 20+ years, I threw mine out and bought Nike. Brooks is 100% Republican. They can all kiss my shiny white hiney. I’ll be back to bipartisan shopping when MAGA dissolves. In the meantimes it’s all Blue, Women, BIPOC, whichever stores aligns with my belief in a truly better America, not a blue eyed blonde Republican Jesus America.

Kathy Tankersley's avatar

Thank you, I forgot about that site. Definitely will check it out. I told my family that Amazon is out for me as well as Target and never Hobby Lobby. I just read about the Nike Corp and glad we bought some of their shoes for school.

KCathcart's avatar

I haven’t eaten at ChickfilA, or shopped at Hobby Lobby for YEARS. Target got axed. I have gone to Amazon, found what I needed, and then tracked down the item from the vendor or another second-party seller. The corporations are feeling it and I’m so glad. Our spending habits matter!

ric leczel's avatar

and look how much your boycott has affected the fortunes of Chick-fil-A or Hobby Lobby, in contrast to the boycott of Target, Bud Light, and now Cracker Barrel

KCathcart's avatar

I have better taste than Bud Light, when I indulge. And Cracker Barrel? They aren’t on my radar. Next.

ric leczel's avatar

typical egocentric attitude in vogue today. bud light and cracker barrel are just for fat lazy maga redneck. got it. those rednecks buying power seems rather strong - it crushed bud light and CB just lost $100M in market value. and the bad orange is president. seems like a political and cultural firestorm for the haters. volley to you

ric leczel's avatar

Nikes are made with child slave labor, lol

KCathcart's avatar

I understand and acknoweldge that child factor labor is still a better alternative to what other choices they have. You get me?

d3adtir3d's avatar

I've really never heard such a stupid sentence. "I acknowledge the child labor there that elusively exists for my convenience is better than child sex slavery" what the hell?

ric leczel's avatar

fair enough - we should institute that here in the US - options for childhood:

slave labor or sex slave

as long as we got our cheap-ass Nikes

uhm, am I missing any others?

KCathcart's avatar

Do you have a point?

Or a suggestion? Or a solution? Because if you don’t, move off my comment thread and go attempt to engage someone else.

*edited to soften the rude reply.

Brett's avatar

The solution is go without ya retard

KCathcart's avatar

That entire comparison is crazy.

*also edited to correct my rudeness.

ric leczel's avatar

making children slave labor is better than what alternative? how about a boycott on Nike for using slave child labor instead of manufacturing outrage at a blonde chick in selling jeans seems like carls jr was using a hot a blond chick to sell burgers. sounds like a perfect mad man episode.

The mention of blue eyes in the American Eagle made me instantly think of Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye". The ad made me uncomfortable, but thinking of Toni Morrison's first novel in this connection made a rock solid connection to the very ugly undertones of eugenics. Even if they also starting preparing this ad months ago, the groundwork has been there for it for a long time, and the systemic racism has been sitting for there for several centuries now... The A.E. people might think they had fantastic timing, but I think Gap and Katseye made a great takedown. :)

Nothing in American Eagle is made in America!!!

WTF 😳 this is supposed to be Gaps add that wins at diversity? 🤣

Sure it may be diverse because you have people of color and not just a token black person but an actual spectrum of people of color, but that’s it.

I see no difference in the people. There’s no people over 100 pounds in this picture, no people of different abilities or ages.

This is not a symbol of diversity! It’s just the same skinny fit, Bitch standard of European beauty.

This is showing problem of how the white colonization fucked with other cultures and creates conformity.

K👀le's avatar

Models are skinny to properly show garments. Race is a factor that cannot be controlled, your calorie intake can be controlled - especially upper limits. I hope this helps you grasp some realism about the garment modeling industry. Oh and also, thin women are conventionally more attractive in society, so that’s why it’s advertised as such.

I noticed immediately… all the dancers were thin.

Great article and I loved seeing the dance video/commercial also.

KC's avatar

Really insightful piece. Thanks for writing it. One question: who was in the room shaping these campaigns? Gap is known for its dance and music-driven ads, and they clearly leaned into that energy. The other ad felt lazy by comparison, like a knockoff of the 1980 Calvin Klein ad trying to draw controversy to ramp up sales.

Always enjoy your work and your perspective.

Fantastic article! Thank you for all your hard work!

A bunch of size 2’s isn’t diversity.

jointheswamp's avatar

Y'all looove performative lip service so much lolololol same reason y'all fall for Newsom and Harris. It's not like the ad said BLM or Free Palestine. Representation isn't actually confrontational to eugenics marketing. When will we stop falling for capitalism?
