We who are older recall Miami Herald’s amazing Julie K Brown’s reporting on this. People perhaps don’t know the history, or they forget…

You have to admire the determination of conspiracy theorists, if nothing else.

They subscribe to the most complicated routes of thinking...the more twisted the better. They cannot accept Occam's Razor or simple ideas. If you argue the point or show them other sources or facts, you are a "shill," part of "the plot," and, in the case of history, a "court historian."

How they get there fascinates me...I know a tiny bit about it, as for years and years, I firmly believed that my high school's assistant principal was sitting at the center of a web, like Moriarty, pulling threads and twitching, using his teachers and flunkies, to torture and eventually kill me.

Finally, in my own despair, I wrote him a 15-page screed, listing all my accusations against him, his administrators, teachers, beehive-haired secretaries, and the whole boiling set-up, and ended it by offering to commit suicide in front of him if he would agree to give my parents a memo on why my death was justified and to treat my disabled brother as a disabled student.

What's important is not how this came out but how I was thinking. This was not a logical conclusion by me. The incidents I was having were separate and mostly random, although my problems were connected. When the poor guy read my screed, he actually told me later that he had no idea most of this was going on, and had he known, he would have addressed it.

I never did trust or like him, but he made changes, and I survived.
